Top 10 Family-friendly Holiday Movies

Hello World

So, technically in our house we celebrate Yule and exchange gifts during the Winter Solstice. However, they don't exactly make a lot of children's holiday movies about Yule. In fact, I don't know of a single one. I did grow up with a bunch of great Holiday movies about family and love that I look forward to sharing with my daughter though. I also decided to share the top 10 movies here.

10. Arthur Christmas (2011) [PG]

Arthur Christmas is a really cute movie about Santa's son, Arthur, who spends his time reading children's letters to Santa. When a child gets missed he and his grandfather fly to make sure she wakes up to her present Christmas morning. It has quite a few funny jokes and is overall a really endearing movie.

9. Christmas With the Kranks (2004) [PG]

Based on the book Skipping Christmas by John Grisham, Christmas with the Kranks follows Luther and Norah Krank as they attempt to skip Christmas for the first time ever to go on a cruise while their daughter is out of town. This movie is a wild ride and so much fun.

8. Elf (2003) [PG]

Will Ferrell plays Buddy the Elf. A human who ended up in Santas workshop and was raised by Elves; as he travels to New York City to meet his father for the first time ever. It's Will Ferrell, need I say more?

7. Home Alone (1990) [PG]

Kevin McCallister doesn't get along with his family. When he wishes for his family to disappear he didn't realize it would actually happen, but when two burglars threaten his home he has to stand up and protect his house. This movie never fails to get a laugh from me.

6. Mickey's Once Upon a Christmas (1999) [Not Rated]

This one is an anthology movie with 3 stories, including a retelling of The Gift of the Magi. The first story is about Huey, Dewey, and Louie finding out why it wouldn't be so great for it to be Christmas every day. The second story is about Max, Goofy's son, and the fact that he isn't quite sure if Santa is real anymore. I had this one on VHS growing up, so it was watched every winter season.

5. How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) [PG]

The Grinch hates the Whos, thus he hates Christmas as well. One night he plans to steal Christmas. This is the best version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas and you can't change my mind. Jim Carrey is a gift and every line is gold. Plus Cindy Lou Who grew up to be the lead singer of a bangin' ban.

4. The Santa Clause (1994) [PG]

Scott Calvin is a workaholic father who is barely there for his son. Through strange events one Christmas Eve he becomes Santa Clause. If you told me you grew up celebrating Christmas, but you've never seen this movie, I'm not entirely sure I'd believe you. Tim Allen kills it as Scott Calvin as he comes to terms with being Santa and trying to be a good father. This is a holiday classic in it's truest form.

3. The Polar Express (2004) [G]

Tom Hanks narrates this tale of a little boy learning what it means to believe. It is a beautiful movie with an ending that makes me tear up every time. The music is fun and a few songs have even made it on my winter playlist.

2. The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) [G]

Ebenezer Scrooge doesn't have friends, barely has family, and is overall a cold-hearted man. One night he is haunted by three ghosts who hope to show him how shameful his ways have been. This is my favorite retelling of this classic tale.

Honorable Mention

So I had a movie I wanted to put on the list and even though it is rated PG-13 I felt a bit odd just throwing it on this list because a) it would be number one and b) it is quite scary and is a bit intense for actual children. Though if you have older children or teens that like horror movies then you should probably check it out and share it with them. The movie is called Krampus and it came out in 2015. From the moment I saw it, it was apart of my holiday lineup.

1. Tim Burton's A Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) [PG]

Jack Skellington is unsatisfied with his life as the Pumpkin King. During a long walk in the woods, he comes across Christmastown and decides to try something new. This movie is the perfect autumn/winter movie. I watch it for both seasons every year.

These are just some of the movies we watch. What movies do you watch during this time of year? Let me know below!!

Thank you so much for reading!
